Sri Lanka has joined the global call for 100% clean as part of the world’s largest civic mobilisation for climate change abatement. Sri Lankans will join millions worldwide in the largest climate mobilisation in history at 9 a.m. on Sunday when residents and visitors of Colombo will gather in front of Independence Square, Colombo 7, to deliver the millions-strong call for a 100% clean future. The 21 September global day of action takes place on the doorstep of an emergency summit of world leaders in New York to discuss a unified government response to climate change, chaired by UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon. Local, national and international civil society organisations are meeting world leaders as they arrive in New York City with a hundreds of thousands strong People’s Climate March. At the same time, thousands of petition deliveries demanding 100% clean will be held in more than 88 countries, including a ‘Climate March’ event right here in Colombo, Sri Lanka, at the Independence Square. Polls show 90% of people worldwide see climate change as a serious problem. Now over a million people in the streets are making it clear that world leaders must take urgent action to stop catastrophic climate change. “This climate day of action is snowballing into a massive mobilisation of millions around the world who want leaders to do more to stop runaway climate change,” said Abdul Qadir Uvais, an Avaaz member from Colombo, Sri Lanka. “Colombo residents are taking part to help show the huge level of public support for a global deal that will avert climate catastrophe and unleash a new 100% clean future.”
