The PGA (Parliamentarians for Global Action) has extended their invitation to Thilanga Sumathipala (MP) to participate in the UN Conference on Arms Trade Treaty
Declaration in UN Headquarters in New York.
The conference began on 2 July and will go on until 27 July.
After the resolution on an Arms Trade Treaty by the UN General Assembly in 2006, it requested countries to submit their views to the 2007 report of the Secretary General. At the end of 2009 the general assembly decided to convene a Conference on Arms Trade Treaty in 2012 “to elaborate a legally binding instrument on the highest possible common international standard s for the transfer of conventional arms”.
It is scheduled to present the “Control Arms Global Parliamentarian Declaration an Arms
Trade Treaty” which was launched at the 33rd Annual Forum of PGA in Colombo Sri Lanka in November 2011, to the UN Secretary Central Ban Ki Moon by the President H V Ross Robertson which includes more than 1,500 signatures of the legislators who are members of PGA.
Sumathipala participated in 3rd and 4th Preparatory Committees in July 2011 and February, 2012, representing Sri Lanka. He also articulated about ATT with a private member motion in the Parliament of Sri Lanka.
