Three students of Rajarata University arrested for taking Vice Chancellor hostage

Three student leaders of the Rajarata University senior student association have been arrested for taking the university’s Vice Chancellor and several others staffers hostage last week. The student leaders were arrested on charges of unruly conduct and wrongful confinement of the Vice Chancellor and other academic staff of the Rajarata University, Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana said The spokesperson added that a further 37 connected with the incident have been identified and that statements have been recorded from 20 students already. Meanwhile, the university, which was reopened Monday for academic activities, was closed again until further notice as academic and non-academic staff refused to work due to fears for their safety. Only the Medical Faculty will remain open. The Applied Science, Management studies and Social Science faculties in Mihinthale, and the Agricultural Faculty in Puliyankulam were closed Wednesday as well. The Rajarata University Teachers Union said that they will not conduct academic and administrative activities as the situation still remains volatile and unsafe. Students residing in the hostels have been ordered to vacate premises before 4 p.m. today. It has been reported that the Rajarata University administration has decided to dissolve all student unions including the main student’s union and faculty unions.
