Former United National Party (UNP) General Secretary and Health Minister Tissa Attanayake yesterday filed a petition before the Supreme Court challenging the UNP for cancelling his party membership. Following a decision taken by the UNP Central Committee on 9 February, Attanayake was expelled from the party after he pledged his support to the then President Mahinda Rajapaksa during the run-up to the 2015 Presidential Election. Soon afterwards Attanayake was appointed as Health Minister by President Rajapaksa. Attanayake was arrested on criminal charges on 2 February for allegedly falsifying and fabricating documents to discredit President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe during the presidential election campaign after the election, and was released on bail several days later.
