By Chamodi Gunawardana The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) yesterday said that according to parliamentary traditions they had the right to nominate TNA Leader R. Sampanthan as the Opposition Leader, a post they are confident he will earn today. TNA Parliamentarian Suresh Premachandran speaking to Daily FT said: “The TNA is the single largest Opposition party in Parliament today. Therefore according to the law and parliamentary traditions we have the right to nominate our party leader R. Sampanthan as the next Opposition Leader.” Commenting further about the other Parliamentarians who had been nominated for this position he stated that all the political parties in Parliament today were trying to obtain the Opposition Leader’s post. “Current Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva and Mahajana Eksath Peramuna Leader and United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) MP Dinesh Gunawardena have also been nominated for this post. However, we don’t want to fight with them because we believe Sampanthan will win without a race. Now we are waiting for the Speaker’s decision,” he concluded. The Speaker is expected to give a final decision regarding the post of Opposition Leader today.
