The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) yesterday accused the Government of having links with the LTTE by supporting former rebels and giving them Government positions.
TNA leader R. Sampanthan, speaking in Parliament, insisted that the TNA never supported the LTTE but merely looked to work with them to secure a political solution for the conflict.
However he said today former rebels in the likes of Kumaran Pathmanathan and a Minister who was once a rebel in the East as well as a former Chief Minister who was also a rebel, are in the Government or are directly working with the Government.
Sampanthan also recalled that the LTTE had influenced the electoral verdict in favor of the Government in 2005.
“I have nothing to do with the LTTE. You have a lot to do with them. Please do not throw stones at us. We had nothing to do with the LTTE. We worked with them when we needed to bring about a political solution, when we needed to work with them,” he said.
The TNA leader also raised concerns over some military activities in the North both during the recent provincial council elections and after that.
He said that while there are decent soldiers in the army there are also some ‘bad eggs’ who need to be dealt with. – Colombo Gazette
