The TNA has informed the Governor of the Eastern Province to allow the party to form the Eastern Provincial Council since it along with SLMC and the UNP have together secured a majority 22 seats against the UPFA’s and NFF’s 15.
SLMC Leader Rauff Hakeem said a decision on the invitations to form Eastern Provincial Council from both the Government and the TNA will be made after considering the aspirations of its voters and devolution of powers.
SLMC won a decisive seven seats in the Eastern Province whilst the UPFA won 14 and TNA (Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi) secured 11.
Given the profile of contestants, the vote for Eastern provincial Council saw 14 Muslims elected as opposed to 12 Tamils and eight Sinhalese.
