Top UN official visits Sri Lanka to review progress of peacebuilding process

United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman arrived in Sri Lanka on Wednesday for a three-day visit to review the progress of peacebuilding process.

From 19-21 July, the Under Secretary-General for Political Affairs will visit Sri Lanka to follow up on his 2015 visit, to take stock of progress in the country and engage national stakeholders on the peacebuilding process, the UN said.

During his visit, USG Feltman will meet with Government officials and leadership of the Tamil National Alliance.

The Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Ravi Karunanayake, at the ministry this morning. UN Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka, Una McCauley, also participated in the discussion.

Later in the afternoon, the top UN official travelled to the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka and met with the Governor of the Eastern Province, Rohitha Bogollagama, and the Chief Minister of the Eastern Province Nazeer Ahamed and members of the Eastern Provincial Council this afternoon in Trincomalee.

He will also meet representatives of the diplomatic community, civil society and religious leadership.
