Traditional New Year Oil Anointing Ceremony

The traditional Oil Anointing Ceremony for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year was held yesterday at the Yatawatta Rajamaha Viharaya at Koshinna in Gampaha at the auspicious time of 11.16 a.m. President Mahinda Rajapaksa was the chief guest of the ceremony. The state ceremony of anointing oil was organised by the Ministry of Indigenous Medicine with the guidance of the Maha Sanga. The President was anointed with oil while facing south and attired in a greenish garment with Kohomba leaves while standing on Kolon leaves. Nanu was then applied mixed with Kohomba leaves after which it is tradition to take the first bath for the New Year.
