Internal trade authorities in Sri Lanka plan to promote traditional varieties of rice to be sold in the country from January 2014. The Central Province Economic Development Centre has commenced a project to increase and strengthen the distribution of traditional varieties of rice with a higher nutritional value throughout the country. Director of the Centre A.N.B.K. Attanayake and Assistant Director K.B.W. Dayasiri have decided to initiate the project, which is scheduled to be launched on 1 January, 2014. The traditional rice variety called Suvandel is to be distributed with a discount of 20% around the country under the project. The rice will be made available to government as well as private trading institutions. It has been widely publicised that traditional rice varieties are cultivated without the use of any agricultural chemicals or pesticides and are therefore of higher quality than the new rice varieties sold in the market.
