Trials completed for certified compostable plastic bags that degrade within 5 weeks

A German multinational company, BASF Lanka Ltd., supplied Ecovio raw material to produce certified compostable plastic bags which completely degrade within five weeks and the trials were successfully completed at the Mihisaru – Nagoda, Kalutara composting plant. German Ambassador Sri Lanka Dr. Juergen Morhard and his team personally viewed the degradation status of the biodegradable bags at the Mihisaru composting plant. It was observed that the environmental friendly biodegradable bags degraded in controlled conditions with other compostable materials. The raw material imported from BASF – Germany is ideal to produce flexible packaging, garbage bags, shopping bags, etc. Waste Management Authority Chairman Asela Perera, Director Nalin Mannapperuma, Kalutara Urban Council Mayor M.M.H. Jawfer, Western Province Chief Secretary Daya Senevirathne, Kalutara Compost Plant Manager Palitha Udayanga, BASF Lanka Managing Director Panduka Weerasingha and other officials were also present.
