The General Ranjan Wijeratne Foundation facilitated the launch of two timely publications at a special book launch that was held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute in Colombo last week. ‘Total Destruction of the Tamil Tigers’ is an in-depth view of the final stages of the war. The book refers to how government forces literally eradicated the LTTE insurgency. While researching this work Prof. Paul Moorcraft was given unprecedented access to Sri Lankan politicians including the President, the Defence Secretary, senior generals, intelligence chiefs, civil servants, UN officials, foreign diplomats and NGOs. He also interviewed the surviving leaders of the LTTE. His conclusions and findings will no doubt interest both local and international parties. Commenting on the book and one of the reasons for publishing his findings, Prof. Moorcraft notes: “The world has misunderstood this war and it’s time to put that right.” The second book titled ‘Corrupted Journalism: Channel 4 and Sri Lanka’ is a 222-page study of the allegations made by British television broadcaster Channel 4 against the Government of Sri Lanka regarding events that took place during the last few weeks of the civil war. Published by Engage Sri Lanka, an organisation set up to make the case for the United Kingdom engaging more closely with Sri Lanka, the book shows that Channel 4’s programs over the years were unprofessional, prejudiced and inaccurate, both in the content presented, the claims made as well as in the material and facts omitted. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka, while Deputy Chairman of the Ranjan Wijeratne Foundation Rehan Wijeratne, Director of the National Insurance Trust Fund Dr. Lohitha Samarawickrama and Prof. Paul Moorcraft also spoke. The compeer at the event was well-known journalist and corporate trainer Sunesh Rodrigo. Dignitaries from the diplomatic community, NGOs, literary community, media and the general public attended the event. ‘Corrupted Journalism: Channel 4 and Sri Lanka’ is available at all leading book stores in Colombo while both books are on sale at Amazon.com.
