UK PM welcomes Sri Lanka’s commitment to ensure accountability

London: The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron today welcomed the UN Human Rights Council’s resolution ‘Promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka and the Sri Lankan government’s commitment to ensure accountability.

Issuing a statement Friday, Prime Minister Cameron said the resolution is a crucial step towards uncovering the truth about alleged war crimes in Sri Lanka, ensuring accountability for the past and respect for human rights now and in the future.

He said Britain is committed to standing up for those affected by Sri Lanka’s civil war, and has been instrumental in the United Nations (UN) investigation and adoption of this resolution.

“I welcome the Sri Lankan Government’s commitment to ensuring those responsible are held to account and I encourage them to continue to work with the UN.”

“When I visited Sri Lanka I was struck by the huge potential of the country and I urge President Sirisena to develop the work he has already started – to build a peaceful, prosperous and united country where every community has a voice,” he said.
