New York: Sri Lanka has not requested any support from the United Nations to set up the special reconciliation bureau, the UN said on Thursday. In response to an earlier media question, UN Secretary-General Spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said at the press briefing on Thursday that the Department of Political Affairs has not received any request from Sri Lanka to provide assistance to their reconciliation bureau. He said the Department of Political Affairs provides technical expertise to member states upon their request and the United Nations assistance to member states is determined on the basis of consultation within the system. Sri Lanka told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva at the 27th session on 8 September that it was setting up a ‘Special Bureau for Reconciliation’ to facilitate the work of the Committee headed by the Secretary to the President to monitor the implementation of the National Plan of Action of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC). The ‘Special Bureau for Reconciliation’ will assist the line ministries and agencies vested with the responsibility of effectively implementing and monitoring the respective LLRC recommendations assigned to them in the National Plan of Action.
