UNICEF Sri Lanka joins EU to open Women and Children’s Desk at Vavuniya Police

38UNICEF Sri Lanka has joined the European Union in Sri Lanka and the Maldives to open a Women and Children’s Desk (WCD) at the Kanagarayankulam Police Station in Vavuniya.

EU Ambassador in Sri Lanka Tung-Laï Margue, who is visiting the Northern Province from 15-17 February, was joined by the UNICEF Representative Tim Sutton, Resident Coordinator for UN Sri Lanka, Ms. Una McCauley and Deputy Inspector General of Police in the opening of the Women and Children’s Desk.

The Women and Children’s Desk at the Vavuniya police station was constructed and equipped under the European Union Support to District Development Programme (EU-SDDP) with the support of European Union and the UNICEF.

The WCD guarantees a safe space for women and children to report cases of violence, abuse and exploitation. The new facility will benefit over 5000 children and women in the Kanagarayankulam region, the UNICEF said.
