Several trade unions in Sri Lanka are to hold a conference on Tuesday (26) to create awareness among the people about the ill effects of the government’s proposed private sector pension scheme.

Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) head, Joseph Stalin told ColomboPage that the union together with several others has organized a conference on Tuesday morning at the J.R. Jayewardene Center and afterwards a protest at the Lipton Circus.

Stalin says the proposed pension scheme is an attempt by the government to swindle monies from the other funds like the EPF, ETF, and gratuity.

He notes that the pension scheme for the private sector should be similar to that being offered to the state sector employees where the government has formed the fund with its monies.

“In this instance, the government is trying to form the fund with monies from the EPF, ETF and gratuity,” he said.

According to Stalin, the proposed pension scheme would not benefit the private sector employees.
