The United National Party (UNP) General Secretary and Minister of Public Enterprises Development Kabir Hashim said yesterday that the unity government will not be threatened even if some members of the coalition breakaway.

Addressing the media at UNP headquarters Sirikotha, the Minister said the UNP had no issues in securing a parliamentary majority but the party’s aim was to continue to function as a national government to resolve all the national issues faced by the country.

“It is more advantageous if we have an inclusive UNP government. We also like that. But we still think about the country, not ourselves. In order to solve all the national issues in this country, we have to protect the unity government,” the Minister said.

“Therefore, we think that the ties between the two main parties in the unity government will not be lost even if few people separate,” the General Secretary said. “If not, we will look at alternative ways,” he added.

He said the important thing is to protect the national government concept and the two parties can think about party politics after 2020. “We promised to resolve the national issues faced by the country and we must do that first,” he said.
