University non-academic staff to strike on 23 and 24 Feb

The non-academic employees of universities are to strike work on February 23 and 24.

The unions of the non-academic employees of the universities say that they will begin a continuous strike from February 29 unless the solutions are granted to their problems immediately, a spokesman of Inter University United Federation said.

Salaries and Cadre Commission has broken the promise to grant a solution to the problem of salary anomalies within 14 days as agreed on February 02, the unions complain.

The non- academic employees of Sri Lanka’s universities launched several trade union actions demanding the removal of salary anomalies. They are demanding salary increases similar to the salary increase university academics received last year.

The unions say that 12,000 non-academic employees of the universities including the members of the trade union of ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party have pledged support to the strike.
