The main opposition United National Party (UNP) has called on the Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya to uphold the law and urged the people to show a warning sign to the corrupt government during the local government elections scheduled to be held this Saturday.

UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya told a press conference that laws need to be upheld from the nomination period till the final results of the election are announced.

He said the Elections Commissioner should be firm in enforcing the law during the period of elections.

Jayasuriya said the government was blatantly violating election laws by misusing public properties in the run up to the local government elections.

He called on the people to show a warning sign to the government that is marred with corruption and continuously suppress people’s rights.
