The main opposition United National Party (UNP) says the country’s crime rate was on the rise while the government has failed to make the country, the Miracle of Asia.

UNP Spokesperson and parliamentarian Gayantha Karunathilaka told a press conference that the government has failed to stabilize law and order in the country and has pushed the country into an abyss.

He said that people have come to accept that the crime rate has increased and the police are crippled.

He observed that the police through the action to arrest the burglar who broke into the SriLankan Airlines Chairman’s house have shown that the police were capable of taking action.

“However, the police have still not taken any proper action to arrest the culprits behind the burglar at the National Museum, which is part of the country’s heritage,” he charged.

According to Karunathilaka, even a small child could understand that Julampitiye Amare, who has been protected by the government, is responsible for the shooting and killing of two persons in Katuwana.

He noted that the police could not do anything until he finally came to courts and gave himself up like a Bollywood superstar.

He added that such criminals are now spread all over the country.

The UNP also called on the government to seize the large number of illegal firearms in the possession of various criminal gangs and the public to stand against the government’s inaction.
