  • Main Opposition says SSP Rohana has forgotten he is not the spokesman for the SLFP
The main opposition United National Party has called for the resignation of Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana, saying his comments about the party’s candidates smacked of politicking and a gross violation of the code of conduct governing public officials. “SSP Rohana appears to have forgotten that he is the Police Spokesman and not the spokesman for the Sri Lanka Freedom Party,” the UNP charged in a statement after the official criticised the party’s choice of candidates following the arrest of a UNP candidate for the Western PC polls, who was arrested on suspicion of being involved in a major theft.  The UNP has reiterated the need to act impartially in Fernando’s case and not attempt to seek political mileage through the process, the party said. “However, the Police Spokesman is now attempting to give the Government and the UPFA an advantage by making statements about the issue,” the statement said. “This is a moment when the office of the police spokesman is being shamelessly abused for political reasons,” the UNP charged. The Opposition party said that the Police Spokesman’s remarks cast serious doubts and suspicions about the way in which the legal proceedings into Fernando’s case would be conducted. “This is not only a black mark against the entire Police force, but it is a violation of the code of conduct governing public servants,” the party statement said. It said Rohana had no moral, ethical or legal standing to remain in the position of Police Spokesman any further. “Resign immediately to safeguard the reputation of Sri Lanka’s Police force,” the UNP requested SSP Rohana.
