The main opposition United National Party (UNP) has alleged that the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has begun giving bribes to people even before an election has been announced. UNP leadership council chairman Karu Jayasuriya claims President Mahinda Rajapaksa is operating a ‘dansal’ (stall) at Temple Trees to bribe the ordinary man before the election. The UNP MP said that the UPFA Government has realised they cannot win votes simply by giving food and drinks so they have gone a step further. He says the Government had recently given motorbikes to UPFA local council members despite the Treasury being short of funds. The Government had reportedly distributed 2912 motorbikes to UPFA local council members recently and the UNP says this was done to bribe the officials ahead of the presidential election next year. The UNP MP says motorbikes were given in an attempt to keep the UPFA members happy as some have begun to leave the governing party. Jayasuriya says it not acceptable for motorbikes to be given only to UPFA members or supporters using public funds which is not money belonging to the Government or the President. (Colombo Gazette)
