UNP confident of obtaining over 115 seats

The United National Party (UNP) said yesterday it was confident of securing more than 115 seats in Parliament at the next parliament elections. DFT-2-5

UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella said that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) was clearly divided and had been “hijacked” by outsiders.

He said that people like Wimal Weerawansa, Dinesh Gunawardena and Vasudeva Nanayakara were now dictating terms to the SLFP.

Kiriella said that the SLFP had not learned from the past and instead continued to make the same mistakes.

The former UNP member said that to learn from the past the SLFP may need a new leader who would identify mistakes and rectify them. (Colombo Gazette)

John says UNP will reject Mahinda’s invite

The United National Party (UNP) on Thursday rejected an invitation from former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa to work with him at the upcoming parliamentary elections, the Xinhua news agency reported.

Rajapaksa had invited the UNP and other political parties to join him after he announced his candidacy for the 17 August Parliamentary Elections.

However, UNP senior parliamentarian John Amaratunga told Xinhua that the UNP would not consider such a request and was confident of gaining a majority at the polls.

“The vote base of the UNP will not change even if Rajapaksa contests or not. We are confident we will continue with a majority in Government,” Amaratunga said.
