The main opposition United National Party (UNP) has decided to amend the party constitution at the Working Committee meeting held yesterday.
UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told a press conference that tenure of the party leadership has been limited to six years while the posts of party chairman, general secretary and treasurer will be chosen by the party leader.
He said the decisions had been made at the Working Committee meeting.
He observed that new appointment to the posts of deputy leader, assistant leader and the national organizer will have to be approved by the Working Committee.
He added that there shall be an election in the event more than one third of the total number of members of the Working Committee were to nominate an alternative candidate for the posts of deputy leader, assistant leader and national organizer.
According to Attanayake, if former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka wished to join the UNP, he could do so and make a request which would be considered by the Working Committee.
