The main opposition United National Party (UNP) says that a demand must be made on the Government to implement the rights outlined in the Commonwealth Charter. UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said the Opposition together with the people will take to the streets demanding that the Government implements the Commonwealth Charter. The Samagi movement consisting Opposition political parties, trade unions, organisations and youth movements organised a protest in Fort on Thursday. At the rally the UNP Leader noted that the party would demand that President Mahinda Rajapaksa grant all rights under the Commonwealth Charter after he assumed Chairmanship of the Commonwealth. He likened the President’s appointment as the Commonwealth Chairman to making the naughty boy in the classroom its monitor. Wickremesinghe said that the people were now taking to the streets to demand their rights and the Opposition would stand by them.
