UNP doubts Govt. will hold a free and fair election

Chairman of Sri Lanka’s main opposition United National Party (UNP) Leadership Council, Karu Jayasuriya has doubted that the Government will hold a free and fair election.
He told a news conference that given the actions of governing party members in the run up to the election, there were doubts over the manner in which elections will be conducted for the Western and Southern Provinces.
He said that former Western and Southern Provincial Councillors were still using public property for their election campaigns in violation of election laws.
Jayasuriya also pointed out that a prominent government minister had summoned the district secretaries of the Western and Southern Provincial Councils to question them about the UPFA nomination lists.
He insisted that elections held without the independent commissions will not be free and fair.
However, Jayasuriya’s own party members have expressed doubt whether the party will win any election due to the discord among the party members over the party’s nominations of candidates to the two provincial council polls.
