UNP Matara clashes: More suspects granted bail

Forty five suspects involved in the UNP’s home and home clashes in Matara were released on bail by Matara Magistrate Ruwan Sisira Kumara yesterday. Four suspects remain in custody and will be subject to an identification parade today, lawyers for supporters of UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe told Daily FT. So far three suspects subjected to an identification parade have been identified by members of the anti-Ranil faction who clashed with UNP supporters in Matara, UNP Legal Advisor, Nissanka Nanayakkara said. Meanwhile six suspects including Wickremesinghe’s former Private Secretary Sudath Chandrasekara, a secretary of the UNP leader were arrested yesterday after they surrendered to the Matara Police. Herman Guneratne, father of Provincial Councillor Maithri Guneratne was absent in Court where he was supposed to identify suspects during an identification parade. Guneratne who was remanded in connection with firing a personal weapon into the crowd during the 5 October violence in Matara is at the Merchant Ward of the Colombo National Hospital and cited medical reasons for his absence from court. A team of lawyers led by President’s Counsel Tilak Marapana, President’s Counsel Srinath Perera and including Attorneys at Law Nissanka Nanayakkara, Sanjeewa Senevirathna, Upul Deshapriya, Nilan Amarakoon, Nanda Muruththettuwegama, Dinesh Dodangoda and Upul Kumarapperuma appeared on behalf of the defendants.
