The main opposition United National Party (UNP) yesterday said that no member has yet come forward to contest for the post of party leader.

UNP parliamentarian for the Gampaha District Joseph Michael Perera told a press conference that an election for five senior posts in the party would be held only if an official request was made by more than one person to be appointed to the respective post.

He said that in such an event a secret ballot would be held to elect the members.

He added that the party convention was not held with the aim of holding elections for senior posts in the party, but to ratify a new party constitution.

According to the newly approved amendments to the constitution, office bearers have to be appointed within 120 days.
