The main opposition United National Party (UNP) says it will launch mass demonstrations in May aimed at ousting the Mahinda Rajapaksa Government. UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the mass protests are part of a three stage strategy of the party launched against the Government, according to a report in the Colombo Gazette. He said that the first stage will target the upcoming elections where the UNP will seek to govern the Western and Southern Provincial Councils. Wickremesinghe said that stage two will be the mass demonstrations to be held in May in order to push for early General Elections and the final stage is to win the General Elections. The UNP leader said that while some people are not keen on the provincial council elections the UNP feels the election is key to start trimming the roots of the Government. “We need to loosen the roots of the Government which is like a dead tree. Once the roots are loose we can push the tree down,” he said. Wickremesinghe said that the general public have had enough of the Government and want an alternative and according to him that alternative is the UNP.
