UNP to stage massive demo

The main opposition United National Party (UNP) said that it will stage a massive demonstration and rally on 28 January in Colombo against the Government. UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said that the main intention of the rally to be held at Hyde Park grounds will be to draw attention to the heroin, casino issues and the cost of living. Attanayake said that protest walks will begin at several locations and convene at Hyde Park grounds in Colombo for the rally. The UNP urged the public to join the protest rally and express their displeasure at the Government. Attanayake also said the people should use the upcoming elections to send a signal to the Government that they want a change. He said the UNP is preparing to face the Western and Southern Provincial Council elections and will finalise its nominations name list soon. The UNP MP said that party organisers for the Western and Southern Provinces will be finalised this week. Several senior party members including Ranjan Ramanayake have volunteered to contest for the Chief Ministerial post in the upcoming elections. The UNP also accused the Government of attempting make constitutional amendments to extend its term in office. (Colombo Gazette)
