The main opposition United National Party (UNP) has requested Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa to summon the newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) to parliament in order to request him not to interfere with parliamentary affairs.
Acting UNP Leader Karu Jayasuriya in a letter to the Speaker had said that the summoning of UNP parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayaka by the CID to question him on a statement made in the House was a violation of his parliamentary privileges.
Jayasuriya had asked that the IGP be summoned and ordered not to question the parliamentarian.
Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe last week complained to the Speaker that the police was trying to question MPs on statements made in the House.
The Speaker had then summoned the head of the CID and asked him to refrain from questioning any MP on statements made in the House.
According to Jayasuriya, the police should not be allowed to play politics.
