The main opposition United National Party (UNP) says the government needed to ensure minority rights in order to prevent any serious situations the country could face in future.
UNP Vice President and parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella told Parliament yesterday during a special debate on the resolution passed on Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) sessions in Geneva that the resolution had outlined the need to investigate cases of forced disappearances and strengthen democracy.
He has said the international community was adopting the same strategy they used in the case of Sudan with Sri Lanka.
He has noted that the actions on Sudan eventually led to the creation of a new nation called South Sudan.
According to Kiriella, the country could be divided if the government did not protect minority rights.
