Western Provincial Councillors and attorneys at law Shiral Lakthilake and Maithree Gunaratne yesterday said the decision to expel them from the United National Party was illegal and charged that the Party’s Working Committee was a junta.

Lakthilake and Gunaratne were expelled from the party on Monday for their alleged role in the attack on Sirikotha in December 2011.

“This decision is clearly illegal,” Lakthilake told a media briefing, warning that UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe’s political days were numbered.  Guneratne said that Parliamentarians Palitha Range Bandara and Asoka Abeysinghe had also been suspended from the party and would likely suffer the same fate soon.

Gunaratne said that they would be taking legal action against the Working Committee

decision.
