The CEB Officers probing the power failure on Sunday midnight stated the cause for the blackout was the power consumption declining to an unusual level.

Power and Renewable Energy Ministry Secretary Suren Batagoda has said that these details were excerpted from the report handed over to the ministry by CEB investigators appointed yesterday to probe the power failure.

At the same time, the minimum consumption of electricity after 9 o’clock in the night was reported.

The average daily electricity consumption is 1100 megawatts but it was declined to 940 megawatt last night.

The Ministry Secretary presumed the reasons to the decline were the inclement weather and the weekend holidays.

The entire country fell into darkness after the blackout at 11.53 Sunday night and it continued till 4 a.m. Monday.

Ministry Secretary Suren Batagoda said further investigations would be carried out.
