Two United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) members yesterday called for Central Provincial Councillor Azath Salley’s resignation from politics following a challenge he made regarding a pro-Mahinda Rajapaksa political rally which was held yesterday at Nugegoda.
Before the rally, Salley made a statement to the press saying that he would retire from politics if the organisers succeed in bringing at least 5000 people to Nugegoda from the 5,768,090 voters who voted for former President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the 2015 Presidential Election.
However, during the rally, after it was announced by organisers that there were around 500,000 people present, politicians Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila both called for Salley’s resignation from politics. “After his challenge we invited him to come with his resignation letter to the Nugegoda rally. However, from today Azath Salley’s political career has come to an end because today politically he is nothing but a walking corpse,” Gammanpila pointed out.
Meanwhile, Weerawansa said that instead of 5000 people they had shown him 500,000 people at the Nugegoda rally and now Salley had no other option but to resign from politics.
Yesterday’s rally was organised by Parliamentarians Wimal Weerawansa, Dinesh Gunawardena, Vasudeva Nanayakkara and Western Provincial Councillor Udaya Gammanpila.
