The minority parties of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) yesterday condemned the economic policies of the Government while saying that the regime had failed to keep the promises it made in the budget or bring any economic relief to the public. During a press conference organised by the minority parties of the UPFA who are pushing for former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to be a Prime Ministerial candidate, Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) Leader Dinesh Gunawardena said: “During the budget we refused to vote because we didn’t want to vote for these lies. Today the cost of living has escalated. So the current regime has failed to fulfill the promises they made during the budget. Just visit a Sathosa showroom and see for yourselves what we are talking about as the Government has failed to deliver on the promises they made during the presidential election and the 100-day program or the promises they made in the budget. And as a result the people of this country have fallen into an economic crisis again.” UPFA parliamentarian Vasudeva Nanayakkara, addressing the media briefing, said that the Government had failed to reduce the prices of essential items while their conduct showed that they were a market-minded Government while during former President Rajapaksa’s tenure the country had a public-minded Government. Meanwhile, National Freedom Front (NFF) member Mohamed Muzammil, who was also present at this meeting, talked about the country’s economy sarcastically and said that according to the way the Government was behaving, they had to assume that the economic relief had failed to reach the public because of NFF Leader Wimal Weerawansa’s wife’s birthday as that it the most important issue for the Government at present. “It seems that Sashi Weerawansa’s birthday is the most extraordinary finding of this Government. And we have to assume that her birthday is the reason why the Government has failed to give relief to the public. So her birthday is the reason why coconuts are so expensive today in the market and the reason why prices of tea and rubber have fallen in the market. And her birthday is also the reason why the good governance of the Government is failing to work,” Muzammil added. Pic by Shehan Gunasekaera
