The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) yesterday questioned the agreements reached between Opposition’s presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena, the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA). UPFA MP and Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said that it is unlikely that both the TNA and the SLMC will not agree to back Sirisena unconditionally. He told reporters today that since the TNA was not part of a coalition involving the Opposition, it was hard to think they would offer unconditional support to Sirisena. The minister also recalled that the TNA had in the past noted that it will support any candidate who agrees to the conditions of the TNA and so it is very likely that an agreement was reached between Sirisena and the TNA. Meanwhile, former Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) member Udaya Gammanpila said that the SLMC had been pushing for a separate Muslim administrative district but the president had refused to agree to that. Gammanpila said that if the SLMC withdrew from the Government since the President had rejected the demand for a separate Muslim administrative district, then it is likely that they had decided to support Sirisena as he may have agreed to the SLMC demand. Gammanpila said that Sirisena should make public the agreement he has reached with the SLMC and if he agrees to the formation of a separate Muslim administrative district. (Colombo Gazette)
