Washington DC: The United States on Tuesday welcomed the signing of a civil nuclear cooperation agreement between India and Sri Lanka, saying it is consistent with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards and other international standards and practices. “We welcome regional cooperation on nuclear energy that is consistent with IAEA safeguards and other international standards and practices,” State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki said at the daily press briefing on Tuesday. When asked about the agreement signed between Sri Lanka and India on Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy on Monday, the spokesperson said, “We are aware of the announcement,” but refrained from making any further comment on the deal. According to the agreement signed in New Delhi during Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena’s first overseas visit after assuming the office, the two countries would facilitate cooperation in the transfer and exchange of knowledge and expertise, sharing of resources, capacity building and training of personnel in the peaceful use of nuclear energy. According to the nuclear deal, India will assist Sri Lanka in developing its civil nuclear energy infrastructure. It will also facilitate cooperation in radioactive waste management and nuclear and radiological disaster mitigation and environmental protection.
