Delhi Police on Monday arrested MDMK chief and BJP ally Vaiko as he was leading a protest against President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s arrival in New Delhi for the swearing-in ceremony of India’s 15th Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Vaiko was detained for defying prohibitory orders after he held a demonstration at Jantar Mantar in Delhi against the visit of Rajapaksa. Addressing his supporters at Jantar Mantar, Vaiko said the presence of Rajapaksa would “pollute the sanctity” of Modi’s swearing-in ceremony.
The MDMK chief had earlier opposed the invitation extended to the Sri Lankan President and had asked the Prime Minister-designate as well as BJP President Rajnath Singh to reconsider the decision. Vaiko had earlier written a letter to Modi expressing his sadness over the invitation being extended to Rajapaksa for the event.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa and DMK supremo M. Karunanidhi had also opposed the invite to Rajapaksa.
