The vehicle of UNP chief ministerial candidate Harin Fernando was attacked in Hali Ela yesterday, aides said. Fernando was travelling in the vehicle when it came under attack. The vehicle was pelted with stones and sharp objects while Fernando was on his way to visit injured UNP members in the area who were hospitalised in election day clashes. The popular UNP politician who obtained the most number of preferential votes in the Province was unhurt in the incident. However, aides said his vehicle had been badly damaged. Polls monitors said post-election violence had been sweeping the Province, particularly in the Moneragala District. Several UNP and JVP members’ homes have been attacked. The Uva provincial election became one of the most hotly-contested polls in several years after Fernando quit Parliament to contest as the UNP chief ministerial hopeful in the province. The UNP made significant electoral gains, upping its vote share by over 18% in Saturday’s election. The UPFA by contrast saw its popularity plummet to 51% from 72% in the Uva Province in 2009.
