‘Vesak Week’ declared

The Government has declared 3 and 4 May as Vesak days and the period from 30 April to 6 May as ‘Vesak Week’. This year the State Vesak Festival will be held at Mahiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya in Badulla District on 3 May. Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, Local Government and Democratic Governance Karu Jayasuriya said the State Vesak festival would be conducted centring the Mahiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya on 3 May and Vesak celebrations would be held under the theme ‘Cultivate Compassion’. A Vesak commemoration stamp will be released on 20 April. The sale of liquor and meat is prohibited in supermarkets on Vesak days and the officials are instructed to ensure that slaughter houses, bookies, casinos, nightclubs and fish and meat stalls closed on these two days.
