Walkout during Northern Governor’s speech at NPC

Three Northern Provincial Council (NPC) members boycotted the speech by Northern Province Governor Major General G.A Chandrasiri when the Council convened in Jaffna yesterday. NPC member Anandi Sasitharan said she and two other Tamil National Alliance members objected to the Governor making the speech. TNA MPs Shivagilingam and Sukirthan also walked out of the Chamber during the speech. She said that the three members wanted to send a clear message that the Tamils in the north had suffered when Chandrasiri was the Commander of the North. Sasitharan made a speech when the Council session explaining the reasons behind the decision to boycott the speech of the Governor. She said that as a woman she wanted to draw attention to the plight of the women in the north who had suffered during the war. Major General G.A. Chandrasiri was the Security Forces Commander of the north during the final stages of the war. (Colombo Gazette)
