As tens of thousands of residents in several areas of Colombo and suburbs suffered the effects of a water cut that extended well over the 36-hour deadline, the main opposition United National Party charged that the authorities were lying about the reason for the disruption. UNP Kotte Electorate Organiser Dr. Harsha De Silva charged that there had been no repair needed as indicated by the Water Supply and Drainage Board which was causing the interruption of supply. “We have come to know that there was no repair needed but the main water lines at the Polduwa bridge near Parliament had to be raised so that a UDA project on the Diyawanna Oya could be completed by the end of the month deadline imposed by the defence establishment,” De Silva told the Daily FT. He said the project was aimed at allowing leisure boats and yachts on the Diywanna for the “super rich”. “We demand the immediate restoration of water so that people can at least attend to their basic human needs,” the UNP MP charged. “Tens of thousands of residents of certain areas of Kotte, Nugegoda, Jambugasmulla and Udahamulla within the Kotte electorate have still not got their water connections restored close to 60 hours since being denied of the utility even though almost twice the estimated time for the so called repair has elapsed,” De Silva said. Nearly 72 hours after the water cut was initially imposed at 9 a.m. on Saturday for several areas in the Colombo District. Most areas did not see a restoration of supply even by late Monday. The National Water Supply and Drainage Board announced that restoration of supply had been delayed till midnight on Monday.
