The WE CANCERVIE organisation has arranged a blood donation campaign tomorrow, 1 June, at Sevana Reception Hall, Kottawa Road, Piliyandala from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The campaign is being held in support of cancer patients at the Maharagama National Cancer Institute and has been organised as a part of its supportive programs for cancer patients. Established in January 2014, with the aim of helping cancer patients and cancer-affected families in Sri Lanka, WE CANCERVIVE has carried out supportive programs sponsoring costly injections, distribution of toys and other required food and grocery items along with money donations for cancer patients at the Maharagama National Cancer Institute. In order to raise funds for these events, the organisation has sold 1,000 pens in Canada and 1,000 pens in Malaysia as well as 500 pens in Sri Lanka. The WE CANCERVIVE team has also sold 100 t-shirts in Sri Lanka as another fund raising project. Between 2006 and 2008, a staggering 111,377 patients were admitted to the National Cancer Institute of Maharagama for treatment and investigation. The male-female distributions of inward patients were 42.7% and 52.2% respectively during the period. While 86.7% of patients were adults, 13.2% were children. Most patients from various parts of the country are sent to the NCI for treatment. Every day patients undergoing treatment for cancer mainly depend on the availability of blood and platelets to help with their ongoing care. The organisers kindly request volunteers to participate in the blood donation campaign tomorrow, to give the patients another day to spend with their loved ones.
