  • Brings total number from defections from ruling party to 26
UPFA National List MP Achala Jagoda defected from the ruling party and pledged his support to Opposition presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena at Sirikotha yesterday. Jagoda, who was formerly a JVP MP, left the Marxist party with National Freedom Front Leader and Housing Minister Wimal Weerawansa. Jagoda was also a founder member of the NFF and also served as Deputy Minister of Tourism in the Government for a period. Joining the Opposition yesterday, Jagoda told crowds at an event in Sirikotha that President Mahinda Rajapaksa had only sought to increase his powers since winning the war in 2009. The defection brings the total number of MPs to have defected from the ruling UPFA to 26. (DB)
