  • NFF says decision based on failure to amend 13A ahead of elections
The Wimal Weera-wansa-led National Freedom Front will not contest the Northern Provincial Council elections, a spokesman for the party said yesterday. Addressing a media briefing in Colombo, NFF Media Spokesman M. Muzamil said that the party had decided not to contest in the north because measures had not been taken to dilute the dangerous and separatist provisions of the 13th Amendment. The party would, however, contest in the North Western and Central Provinces, the spokesman said. He added that the NFF would try to remain in Government and attempt to revise the 13th Amendment. “We have started on a road to defeat separatist powers in the 13A and we hope to do it with the Government. However, if this effort fails, we would have no hesitation in making a decision about remaining with the UPFA,” Muzammil said. (DB)
