Weliamuna re-elected to Transparency International Board

Human Rights lawyer and activist J.C. Weliamuna was re-elected to the Board of Transparency International, the global network fighting corruption and promoting integrity, at the Annual General Meeting held in Berlin yesterday. He is also the Chairman of Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL). There were two vacancies and Weliamuna and the chairperson of TI Indonesia were elected.  115 chapters of Transparency International the world over voted at the election to fill the two vacancies. He was first elected to the TI Board in 2010 and will now serve a second term of another three years. Weliamuna was recently presented with the ‘Citizens Peace Award 2012’ buy the National Peace Council of Sri Lanka for “his courageous and committed work to defend and promote human rights in Sri Lanka during the traumatic period of the war, and now in its unsettled aftermath”. It is now 20 years since Transparency International began its fight to end corruption worldwide and has been a busy two decades, with landmark global conventions, leaders held to account for their actions, and millions of people standing up and challenging corruption in their daily lives.
