By Chamitha Kuruppu Minister Wimal Weerawansa yesterday alleged that a weak Ranil Wickremesinghe was finding a scapegoat for the forthcoming presidential election so that the veteran Opposition Leader could protect himself. According to Weerawansa, the Opposition Leader is secretly plotting to put forward a candidate who is weaker and more impotent than himself to compete in the upcoming presidential election. “Ranil Wickremesinghe is on a secret mission to protect the Opposition and party leadership. If Wickremesinghe is not contesting, it proves he is certain about his defeat. He will not want to take the blame for his fourth defeat in a presidential election. He will use a different mechanism. He will put forward someone who will not pose him a threat,” Minister of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Weerawansa said. The controversial Minister charged Wickremesinghe is only concerned about protecting his position and therefore will not make any genuine efforts towards the Opposition’s victory. Weerawansa further said that during the last election Wickremesinghe tricked Sarath Fonseka into competing with Mahinda Rajapaksa. “Poor Fonseka suffered a massive defeat. President Rajapaksa’s victory was so evident that even Barak Obama would not have been able to compete with him at the time.” Weerawansa made these remarks at the recently-held inaugural ceremony of the newly-renovated housing flats in Siridhamma Mawatha, Dematagoda. The renovation of the flats had cost Rs. 13.5 million. “The Opposition Leader is envious of the development that is taking place in the country. Wickremesinghe joked about the carpeted roads. But thanks to those roads today is able to attend four to five public meetings a day,” Weerawansa added.
