Government Minister Wimal Weerawansa has accused Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran of paving the way for communal disharmony by saying Sinhalese families will not be resettled in the north. Speaking at a function in Wellawatte the Minister said that if Sinhalese groups follow Wigneswaran’s line and say Tamils cannot be settled in the south, it would spell disaster for the country. “In the Western Province all communities live together. We are proud of that. By saying Sinhalese people cannot be settled in the north is he saying that Tamils need to be only in the north? Don’t Tamils have a right to live outside of the north? There is an attempt to reignite a flame that has been extinguished,” the Minister said. Weerawansa, speaking at St. Clare’s College Wellawatte, said that there needs to be schools in the north where children from all three communities can study together. “Wigneswaran studied and lived in Colombo, took part in cocktail parties and is going there and saying Sinhalese should not be there,” the Minister added. The Minister said that four years after the war the country is now rebuilding slowly and the gap between all communities has narrowed. However he warned that there is a small group working with vested interests who are attempting to separate the country once again. (Colombo Gazette)
