The first in a series of workshops on Conflict Sensitive Journalism will commence on 15 July at the Kandy Bojunhala event centre.

Based on the initiative of the Bakeer Markar Centre for National Unity, in September 2006, the Weligama Declaration was launched with the leadership of 10 major media institutions. The heads of these major media institutions signed this historic declaration pledging their commitment to championing media’s responsibility towards national unity.

In March 2017, the 10th anniversary was celebrated through a deep dive reflection of this historic Declaration at the Government Information Department. One of the key recommendations that surfaced during this event was the need to widely socialise the significance of the Weligama Declaration. Therefore, the Ministry of National Integration and the Bakeer Markar Centre for National Unity have commenced an island-wide series of workshops to inform and educate journalists on the significance of the Weligama Declaration.

There will be nine provincial workshops with 50 journalists participating in each workshop.

The first workshop will be held in the Central Province on 15 July at 9 a.m. at the Kandy Bojunhala, No. 70, Sangaraja Mawatha – under the patronage of Minister of National Integration A.H.M. Fowzi and Bakeer Markar Centre for National Unity President Imthiaz Bakeer Markar.
